Outdoor Lighting 101 | What You Need to Know Before Installing

As a business owner, it pays for you to improve your physical store’s appearance. After all, it is what customers see first before they enter your premises. If they are not impressed with it, they are highly likely to turn to other options. This is where the importance of outdoor lighting and commercial lighting specialists enter the picture.

Having well-planned exterior lighting can bring your property’s façades and outdoor spaces to life. It goes beyond functionality and can transform your business establishment into an attractive and welcoming one.

With that said, getting started with outdoor lighting can be quite tricky, especially if you have no prior experience with it. To help you get started on the right track, read about the three common outdoor lighting fixtures and how to install them in the sections below:

1. Floodlight

This is a wide-spanning and high-intensity artificial light that is perfect for illuminating the walking paths and corners in your commercial property. It is also extremely helpful in enhancing your security measures. This is because the bright light it produces leaves no blind spot for criminal activities like robbery and vandalism.

You have two options when it comes to floodlights: normal floodlights or LED floodlights. The latter is a great option, especially if you’re looking for an energy-friendly and cost-effective solution.

To install these floodlights, you first need to choose a high point where it will be installed. Then, drill a hole around it where the
electrical cable can pass through to connect your floodlight to a power source. Once you have connected all the parts, test them first to see whether the parts are correctly installed.

2. Garden Light

As its name suggests, garden lights give prominence to the pathway in your landscaped exterior, giving your establishment a beautiful glow at night.

However, before buying garden lights, you first have to study your landscape design. The fixtures you will choose must compliment your garden’s look; otherwise, it may make the whole space unsightly rather than beautify it.

Once you’ve identified a suitable garden light fixture for your property, you may work with professional art lighting specialists for the best results. On the other hand, if you are doing this on your own, remember to distance the post lights at least 8 feet apart from each other during installation. Then, dig at least 3-4 inches below the ground for the post. You also need to drill holes for the electrical cable to pass through to connect the posts to a power source. Once you’re all done, test whether the lights are working.

3. Street Light

This is among the basics of any commercial property. That said, there’s a way for you to spice this up and add beauty to your establishment.

You may explore street lights that work on solar energy. Some of these come with an on/off system you can program to make them operate during your desired hours.

If you are installing solar street lights on your property, you must first check the installation manual that came with the fixtures. In general, you first need to dig the area where you need to place the pole. Then, install the lighting fixture over the pole and set a timer or weather condition to activate its automatic on/off. Once everything is assembled, all you have to do is wait for them to turn on during the time you set!

Conclusion

Outdoor lighting does more than just illuminate the space outside your commercial establishment. It also protects you from criminal activities and allows you to make your property look charming even at night.

The three outdoor lighting types mentioned above are just some of the various options you can choose from. Now that you have a basic understanding of these fixtures, it’s time to try them on your property to give it a new look!
